Once at our dance class one lady mentioned: I know a talented Fallbrook artist -  Marsha Gertenbach-Butman. She is a sculpture
member of the California Art Club and Fallbrook Art Association.  Maybe it would be nice for you to set a meeting with her!
People say that the first impression is the right one. My first impression of Marsha came through her warm and pleasant voice on
the phone. Her enthusiasm for sculpting was compelling. As we learned later, many people knew Marsha because of her friendly
character and hospitable home.
Her husband Ray Butman was also an artist and Director of the Fallbrook Art Association Gallery in the Bob Burton Center for the
Performing Arts (at Fallbrook High School).
People were delighted to come to their wonderful house where they could admire interesting paintings and sculptures as well as
make new friends.
One day we were happy to greet Marsha in our home.
I was always interested in the creative field and had careers in illustration,
design, painting and finally sculpting,-
Marsha told us.
She worked for the two largest U.S. Toy companies, Mattel and Hasbro, sculpting prototypes for dolls and other toys. “I still work
as a freelance sculptor on special projects for several toy companies,” Marsha added. In her life Marsha worked in different areas
of art and with different materials. She has created several large direct-welded metal pieces which incorporate her figurative work
with her cast glass. She has completed a large steel sculpture for the San Diego County Parks Dept, which has been installed in
Wilderness Gardens, a North San Diego County park.  Also, she was commissioned to design and sculpt a large wall piece for the
donor patrons to the Bob Burton Center for the Performing Arts in Fallbrook. Her works have won numerous awards in Southern
California. Once Marsha received Best of Show in a multi media exhibit and won the Directors Award in California Art Club’s 2001
Gold Medal Exhibition.

So, we were sure that the main idea of such sculpture should not be just the beautiful ballet pose. The more important if this
sculpture would talk to everybody about great love, and passing on traditions of high values and moral principles. So, we spent a lot
of time trying to find the right pose, viewpoints and angels which would reflect our conception. We everybody and love for life!
We thought that the right model for such special sculpture should be our beautiful and gifted granddaughter. Marina likes music and
plays piano, does paintings and many interesting artistic crafts, but mostly she adores ballet and dreams to be a ballerina.  Love and
awareness for art and beauty were passed to her through our tradition of teaching children the best things that we appreciated.
In March 2002 the bronze composition
Passing on Traditions was completed for future generations to remember the beauty of
dance and generosity of our teachers and patrons!
We are thankful to one who makes our dream come true,-  said Lila Elizarova, Marina’s mother. At that moment I thought about my
husband Dr. Vic Pankey, about his support, love and understanding. He commissioned this sculpture and his love helped to realize
this long term project. Life could not be so delightful if great love would not be nearby. Love is our guiding Star!
As we learned, Marsha"s sculptures are quite distinctive. She personally carries out all steps from the original clay to a mold, to a
wax, to the ceramic shell and even participates in the bronze pour. Then she does the were happy to find such a unique artist! We
support all those who illuminate the universe within us. Consequently, after several meetings my husband Dr. Victor P. and I
decided to commission Marsha Gertenbach-Butman for a very special project.
She brought to us her portfolio, and some pictures of her previous sculptures impressed us very much. Her world travel and
experiences while living in India often influenced her selection of subjects. However recently, as Marsha said, she focuses most of
her work on the human figure.
The purposeful, revealing name for the future sculpture came first: “Passing on Traditions”.  So, we were sure that the main idea
of such sculpture should not be just the beautiful ballet pose. The more important if this So, we spent a lot of time trying to find the
right pose, viewpoints and angels which would reflect our conception. We considered that such values should go from parents to
children and to the future.  We believe in love for many things, for everybody and love for life!

PASSING TRADITIONS ON...
This sculpture could tell people about the most important values and the purpose of our life: to live in peace, harmony, love and
beauty, which we all have to create and pass on to succeeding generations. Marsha Gertenbach-Butman created the sculpture
which embodies all these thoughts.  That’s why this sculpture should be on the street for everybody to observe and enjoy. It is a
very noble task to create the beauty of your own city for the happiness of all of us and for future generations to enjoy. When
everybody would participate a little, we will have the most wonderful and happy life here.
The arts enrich our lives as individuals and the life  of the communities in which we live.

t is so important and pleasant to live among beauty. Beauty will save the world, - said Fedor Dostoevsky.
Occasionally after our dance lessons I take my granddaughter Marina to a Sculpture Square on the corner of Main and Alvarado
Streets in Fallbrook. There we enjoy the peaceful sound of the fountain and share precious time with each other. Then, we read the
names on the walls and bricks and wonder about all the people who created this wonderful place. In this Sculpture Square we may
pass on an appreciation for the beauty. Here people might have their first lesson about the generosity of those who put hight values
before everything else. Beautiful surroundings, music and graceful movements of dance build children’s soul and create elegance
inside them. We are proud to lend our enthusiastic support to a broad range of arts programs.
